Hangzhou works as a day trip from Shanghai, but an overnight stay gives West Lake, tea areas and historic streets room to breathe.
Build around West Lake
The lake is much larger than it appears on a map. Choose one shore and a small group of gardens, temples or viewpoints rather than circling everything.
Use high-speed rail carefully
Check the exact Hangzhou station and allow time to reach West Lake after arrival. Hangzhou East is a major hub but not beside the lake.
Consider an overnight stay
Early morning and evening are calmer, and an overnight visit makes it easier to add Lingyin Temple or a tea village.
