How to Buy China Train Tickets as a Foreigner

Book Chinese train tickets with a passport using 12306 or an English-language platform.

Reviewed August 20263 min readHow we review

Foreign travelers can book China train tickets online with passport details. The official 12306 service offers direct railway inventory, while third-party platforms may provide a more familiar interface and support in exchange for clearly disclosed fees.

Choose 12306 or a booking platform

Use China Railway's official English website or app when you are comfortable completing account and passenger verification. A third-party service can be useful for language support and itinerary management, but check service fees, refund handling and whether a request is an actual confirmed ticket or only a booking attempt.

Enter passport details exactly

Use the passenger's legal name, passport number and document type exactly as shown on the passport. Complete identity verification before a high-demand travel date when possible. Each passenger must travel with the original document connected to the booking.

Check the full station name

Major cities have several stations: Beijing South, Beijing West and Beijing are different terminals, just as Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai are different. Read both endpoints before payment and calculate the hotel transfer using the complete station name.

Understand the e-ticket journey

For applicable services, the original passport functions as the key identity document for the e-ticket. At the station, pass security and use the designated passport or staffed channel if an automatic gate does not accept the document. A booking confirmation or itinerary printout does not replace the passport.

Changes, refunds and missed trains

Rules depend on timing, ticket status and sales channel. Make changes through the same channel used to book, read the current conditions before payment and avoid assuming a third-party agent can change a ticket at the station as quickly as the official system.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners buy China train tickets online?

Yes. Foreign passengers can book using passport details through the official 12306 service or supported third-party platforms.

Do I need a paper train ticket?

Passport-based electronic ticketing is commonly used. Carry the same original passport used for booking and follow the station's designated identity-check channel.

How early should I arrive at a Chinese train station?

Allow extra time at an unfamiliar station for security, passport checks and finding the correct waiting area and gate. Large terminals should not be treated like metro stations.

Is Trip.com the same as the official 12306 service?

No. 12306 is China Railway's official ticketing service. Trip.com is a third-party booking platform that may charge service fees and provide additional language or customer support.
