What to book before a China trip

Book the items that can block the trip first: entry eligibility, international transport, the first hotel and scarce dated attractions. Trains, eSIMs and transfers follow once the route is stable. Ordinary meals and flexible local activities rarely need the same urgency.

An official channel usually offers the direct rules and base product. Train booking checklist for foreign travelers

China Railway's official guidance allows foreign travelers to buy through the 12306 English website or app after identity verification. Enter the passenger name, nationality and passport number exactly. A pending request or waitlist is not a confirmed ticket.

• Check the full origin and destination station names
• Use the passport that will be carried on travel day
• Confirm the train number, date and departure time
• Read change and refund rules
• Save the confirmed booking, not only the payment receipt

Hotels, tickets, eSIMs and transfers

For hotels, confirm the address, latest arrival time and cancellation deadline. For attractions, identify whether the product is admission, a guided package or transport only. For eSIMs, check device compatibility, activation timing and whether voice or SMS is included. For transfers, provide the exact terminal, train station or hotel address.

Avoid expensive booking mistakes

Use one consistent passport spelling across reservations and never assume similarly named stations or airports are interchangeable. Keep screenshots of critical confirmations offline, but also retain the original booking email or app record. Recheck official notices when weather, public holidays or major events could affect access.
