Alipay Not Working in China? Fix Card, Verification & Payment Problems

Troubleshoot Alipay card binding, identity verification, declined payments, QR codes and foreign-card limitations.

If Alipay is not working, identify whether the failure occurs during account verification, card binding or an individual merchant payment. Foreign cards require approval from the issuing bank, and official guidance says supported brands, limits and charges can vary by payment product. Repeating the same failed payment rarely fixes the underlying problem.

Card will not bind

Check that the legal name, passport details, card number, expiry date and billing information match the bank's records. Your issuing bank may reject the connection because of security controls or an unrecognized authorization request. Contact the issuer through its official channel and ask whether the card allows international, online and wallet transactions.

Identity verification fails

Use a clear, valid passport and enter the identity exactly as requested in the app. Avoid nicknames, translated names or a different document from the one used earlier. If automated verification fails, follow the app's current manual review process rather than sending identity documents to an unofficial helper.

Card is linked but payment is declined

A successful card link does not guarantee every transaction. Check mobile data, the merchant name, amount, card balance, issuer security alerts and the payment route. Some mini-program, transfer or person-to-person functions may not support an overseas-card-funded payment in the same way as ordinary merchant consumption.

QR code or transport code does not work

Confirm the correct city and service, refresh connectivity and check whether the code needs separate identity activation. At a merchant, distinguish scanning the merchant's collection code from showing your own payment code. For transport, keep a single-journey ticket or physical bank card as backup.

Fees, limits and currency conversion

Do not rely on an old universal fee chart. Official guidance states that brands, limits and charging standards can vary by product and the live service agreement controls. The card issuer may also apply its own foreign-transaction fee or exchange rate.

Use a layered backup plan

Set up another supported card or WeChat Pay before departure and carry a modest RMB reserve. Never give a stranger a one-time code, password or remote access to fix a wallet. Use only Alipay support and the issuing bank's official contact channels.

Frequently asked questions

Why will Alipay not accept my foreign card?

Common reasons include mismatched identity details, issuer security blocks, unsupported card settings or failed bank authorization. Check both Alipay and the issuing bank.

Why is my Alipay payment declined after the card was linked?

The merchant route, transaction type, amount, issuer controls or connectivity can still cause a decline. Try a different legitimate payment method rather than repeatedly submitting.

Can every Alipay feature use an international card?

No. Ordinary merchant payments may work while transfers, mini-programs or other scenarios have different eligibility.

Should I let someone else verify Alipay for me?

No. Do not share one-time codes, passwords or passport files with an unofficial helper. Use official support channels.
