Kunming Travel Guide and Yunnan Gateway

Plan central Kunming, the Stone Forest, railway stations, altitude and onward travel in Yunnan.

Kunming is more than an airport connection: allow two days for city neighborhoods and Yunnan culture, then add a separate day if the Stone Forest is a priority. It is also the main transport gateway for a wider Yunnan route.

Spend one day in the city

Combine Green Lake and nearby streets with a museum, market or historic district. Kunming works best as an introduction to Yunnan's regional cultures and food rather than a checklist of monumental landmarks.

Treat Stone Forest as an excursion

The karst landscape lies outside central Kunming and needs most of a day once transfers and walking are included. Confirm the transport endpoint, return schedule and current ticket procedure before leaving.

Check both station and airport

Kunming South is the principal high-speed rail station but is far from many central hotels. Kunming Railway Station and Changshui Airport create different transfer plans, so never rely on the city name alone.

Prepare for elevation and sun

Kunming is at moderate altitude with strong ultraviolet exposure. Hydrate, use sun protection and avoid overloading the first day if you have arrived from sea level.
