Shanghai Airport Transfer Guide: Pudong and Hongqiao

Compare metro, airport rail, taxi and private transfer options from Shanghai's two airports.

Reviewed August 20263 min readHow we review

Shanghai has two major airports. Pudong is far east of the center; Hongqiao is closer and integrated with a major rail hub. Confirm the airport code before planning any connection.

From Pudong International Airport

Metro is economical but slower with luggage. Airport rail services, taxis and pre-arranged transfers reduce complexity depending on your hotel and arrival time. Check the current final-departure time before relying on public transport late at night.

From Hongqiao Airport

Hongqiao is closer to central Shanghai and connected to metro lines. Terminals and Hongqiao Railway Station form a large complex, so allow substantial walking and security time for rail connections.

Avoid tight airport changes

Transferring between Pudong and Hongqiao crosses much of the city. Do not treat them as neighboring terminals, and build a large buffer around separate tickets.

Can I connect from Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Railway Station?

Yes, but the cross-city transfer is long. Allow a generous buffer and verify current transport hours.
