Where to Stay in Shanghai for a First Visit

Compare the Bund, People's Square, former French Concession and Pudong for sightseeing and transport.

Reviewed August 20263 min readHow we review

For a first Shanghai trip, choose a walkable neighborhood with a direct metro connection instead of selecting a hotel only by skyline view or district name.

People's Square and Nanjing Road

This is the most convenient all-round base for the Bund, museums and multiple metro lines. Confirm the hotel's exact position because the pedestrian street and surrounding blocks cover a large area.

Former French Concession

Choose areas around the central Xuhui and Huangpu streets for cafés, leafy walks and a neighborhood feel. Metro access varies by block, so check the walking route rather than the straight-line map distance.

The Bund or Pudong

Bund hotels offer historic atmosphere but can cost more and may sit farther from metro entrances. Pudong suits business, modern views and some families, but crossing the river repeatedly adds time.
