Build the city by district
Use Futian for the civic center, skyline and major rail connections. Nanshan combines design, museums, Overseas Chinese Town and Shekou's waterfront atmosphere. The Dapeng Peninsula offers beaches, geological scenery and Dapeng Fortress, but it is a separate excursion rather than a quick downtown stop.
Where to stay
Futian is the practical first-time base for metro and high-speed rail access. Nanshan works better for design, technology campuses and Shekou. Staying near a Hong Kong border checkpoint only helps if that exact crossing fits your onward route.
Crossing to Hong Kong
A Shenzhen–Hong Kong journey includes immigration procedures and cannot be treated like an ordinary metro transfer. Confirm your entry eligibility, the exact checkpoint, its operating status and onward transport before leaving the hotel.
Plan realistic distances
Shenzhen is long and spread across multiple districts. Group attractions geographically and avoid combining eastern beaches with a dense central-city program on the same day.
