Xi'an Travel Guide

Plan the Terracotta Army, city walls, food and transport in Xi'an.

Reviewed August 20263 min readHow we review

Xi'an combines an internationally important archaeological excursion with a compact historic center. Two full days covers the essentials; three days allows a major museum and a less rushed view of the city's many historical periods.

Give the Terracotta Army its own day

The museum is in Lintong outside central Xi'an. Reserve with matching passport details, verify the current official entry route and allow for transfers plus several hours across the principal pits and exhibits. Avoid building the evening around another timed attraction.

Use a separate day for the city center

Combine the city wall with the Bell and Drum Tower area, then choose a mosque, museum, pagoda or neighborhood according to interest. Xi'an is more than one dynasty and one food street, so use museums and archaeological context to understand the city beyond its most photographed stops.

Where to stay

The Bell Tower and South Gate areas are the most practical short-stay bases for central sights, food and metro access. Xi'an North is useful for an early high-speed train but is not the best sightseeing base. Confirm whether a hotel sits inside or outside the wall when estimating road travel.

Connect Xi'an to a wider route

Direct high-speed rail makes Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai a realistic classic itinerary, but each transfer still consumes much of a day. Luoyang can be a regional extension for Longmen Grottoes; Chengdu adds food and pandas but fits better when the full trip is closer to two weeks.
