Beijing Travel Guide

Plan where to stay, what to book and how to move around Beijing.

Reviewed August 20263 min readHow we review

Beijing rewards advance planning. Controlled-entry museums, a vast urban area and a Great Wall day outside the center make it more important to build a workable route than a long sightseeing list.

How many days to spend in Beijing

Allow four full days for a balanced first visit: two days for the imperial core and nearby neighborhoods, one for the Great Wall, and one for the Summer Palace, a museum or a slower hutong route. Three days is possible if you choose fewer central sights; five days gives weather and reservation flexibility.

What to reserve first

Confirm the Palace Museum, Tian'anmen-area and major museum procedures before locking the itinerary. These can use separate real-name reservations, and an entry for one place does not automatically include nearby sites. Use the same passport details as your travel document and recheck official notices shortly before the visit.

Plan by area, not by landmark count

Group the Forbidden City and central axis together, place the Temple of Heaven with southern Beijing, and give the Summer Palace its own half-day. The Great Wall is a separate road or rail excursion; choose Mutianyu, Badaling or another authorized section before deciding transport.

Where to stay and how to move

For a first visit, central areas with dependable metro access reduce repeated cross-city journeys. Wangfujing and Qianmen favor classic sightseeing, while Dongzhimen can simplify some airport and metro connections. Save every hotel, station and attraction name in Chinese for taxis and ride-hailing.

Four full days is a practical baseline, including one separate Great Wall day. Add a day for more museums or a slower pace.

Do Beijing attractions require advance reservations?

Several major attractions and museums use advance real-name booking. Procedures vary, so verify each official channel rather than assuming one reservation covers an entire area.

Which Great Wall section is best from Beijing?

Mutianyu is a balanced first-time choice; Badaling has extensive public transport and facilities. Choose according to mobility, crowd tolerance and the verified transport plan.
