Which Great Wall Section Should You Visit from Beijing?

Compare Mutianyu, Badaling and Simatai for transport, crowds, hiking and first-time visits.

Reviewed August 20263 min readHow we review

There is no single Great Wall entrance. Mutianyu, Badaling and Simatai offer different transport, crowd and walking conditions, so select the section before booking a vehicle or tour.

Mutianyu

A strong first-time choice with restored scenery and cableway options. It usually requires a road transfer and careful confirmation of ticket, shuttle and cableway inclusions.

Badaling

Badaling has the broadest public transport options and extensive facilities, but popular periods can be very crowded. Check the precise train or bus plan rather than relying on an old timetable.

Simatai and other sections

Simatai can pair with Gubei Water Town and may offer seasonal evening access. Wilder sections demand more hiking experience and should not be attempted through unauthorized routes.
